Oslo Welsh Society Brochure

Oslo Welsh Society - Cymdeithas Cymry Oslo - was founded in 1983 by a
group of expatriates led by long-standing chairman Lynn Edwards, and was intended
first and foremost as a 'home from home'  for Welsh people living in Norway.
The Society's constitution more formally states that the Society shall be both
an instigator of and a focal point for Welsh activities in Norway. In addition, the
Society shall work to promote cultural relations between Norway and Wales.

Membership is open to anyone who is Welsh or of Welsh parentage or descent,
and to others with close Welsh connections and / or a significant interest in Wales
and Welsh matters.
Members pay an annual membership subscription. A small fee may also be levied
at meetings to cover the costs of refreshments etc.

The Society's members - most but not all of whom live in the Oslo area- include
people who have made Norway their home and others who are living here on a
less permanent basis. At the moment we have about 50 members, but we would
welcome many more.

The Welsh Society gathers regularly (the first Friday of every month, if possible),
usually at the home of a member.
Our meetings range from purely social gatherings, such as cheese and wine parties,
barbecues and the St David's Day and Christmas dinners to cultural activities.
The latter have included a theatre evening with a visiting Welsh theatre group at the
Ibsen Festival, concerts and performances by Welsh singers, musicians and
choirs and exhibitions of the work of Welsh artists living in Norway or Wales.
There have been excursions to various places of interest, and numerous talks on
Welsh subjects by our members.
More often than not our meetings are a combination of the social and the cultural.

The Society has organized three well attended St David's Day concerts at Gamle
Logen in Oslo. Twice we presented the well known Welsh harpist Eleanor Bennett
and once the baritone Iwan Wyn Parry. Financial support for these concerts was
given by amongst others The British Council, The European Union Delegation in
Oslo and Cunard Lines.
In the summer of 1997 the Welsh Society joined forces with the Scottish and Irish
communities in Oslo to organize a very successful Celtic ceilidh. We hope to make
this a biannual event.

The Welsh Society publishes an occasional newsletter.
